Wine Club – Puglia tour
Join the Wine Club trip to beautiful Puglia, the “heel of the Italian boot”, which is increasingly recognized for its wines.
Enjoy the outstanding local cuisine staying in the wonderful art city of Lecce. Spring is the perfect time to explore the surrounding wine areas – a picturesque landscape of undulating hills, white villages, massive olive trees and vineyards.
Puglia, Italy’s southeastern extremity, was for centuries the epicentre of Europe’s trading routes boasting a culture that was originally Greek then Roman, Byzantine, Saracen, Norman and Spanish. This melting pot has left a quirky mixture of architectural heritage, from Baroque churches and Romanesque cathedrals to whitewashed villages and the traditional conical dwellings called Trulli. Ostuni, Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, are just a few among the beautiful cultural highlights we will visit, on top of Lecce, the so-called Florence of the South.
Puglia is in the process of rediscovering its winemaking heritage thanks to increasing interest from local and international markets. We will visit Polvanera, a proud representative of the Gioia del Colle new wave of Primitivo: organic fruity wines made on one of the few hills of the region that are more and more catching the eye of the international judges.
At Leone De Castris, the oldest winery in Puglia dating back 1665, the focus will be on spicy reds made from Negroamaro and the surprising quality of their famous rosé produced out of the same grapes. A visit to Tenute Rubino will add a deep insight into the rare Susumaniello, an interesting variety once on the edge of extinction, which is now one of the icons of the region’s winemaking rebirth. The whites will also surprise, based on local varieties such as the perfumed Minutolo, and the zesty Bianco di Alessano and Verdeca.
